School: Back to school shopping ripoffs?

Back to School 2010 by Pacerboy4

It's time for the kids to go back to school this fall. This means that they need a new fall wardrobe, filled with the latest fashions and styles. However, you aren't even sure how the budget will pay for the cost of gas or food, let alone any new clothes for your children.

Your child isn't going to want to hear that mom and dad can't afford to buy them new clothes. Your child doesn't care that we are in an economic recession or that the money you make at your job has to go to pay household bills. So what can you do to keep the child happy and be able to afford your other bills? This article will explore ten tips for fall back to school clothes shopping on a budget.

1. Learn the art of mixing and matching to make extra outfits. Three pairs of jeans and three shirts and three jackets can make in excess of nine different outfits when the selections are varied each day. You will have to make sure that the different items of clothing work well together.

2. If you can't afford to buy new outfits, then just buy new accessories that are in fashion. An outdated pair of jeans can become the newest style with a hip new belt. Boring outfits from last year can be spiced up with new necklaces and bracelets. Even a new pair of shoes can make an outfit feel like it's had a makeover.

3. Make adjustments to the clothing yourself at home. For example, if crop pants are now in for the fall and your child only has long jeans, try cutting the jeans into the crop style and hemming the bottom yourself to make some cropped jeans for your child. Then she'll fit right in. If three quarter length sleeves have become the rage, cut your child's long sleeve shirts to give them this new style. The possibilities are endless.

4. Use sewing tricks to make adjustable garments. My boyfriend's sister actually gave me this idea. Take a pair of jeans, and cut them off right below the knee. Then, put in a zipper so the bottom part can be put back on. This way, you've still got the long jeans as well as some cropped jeans. One piece of clothing has two different styles.

5. Dye garments. If your kid has some old jeans that have faded, and this fall the newest fad is for dark jeans, just dye them. You can find dye at Walmart for less than $5.

6. Buy one or two key new pieces that will bring last year's wardrobe back to life. A new jacket and some new jeans can spice up last year's wardrobe, and most of the other kids won't even notice that your child has some of the same shirts from the previous school year.

7. Get creative. Let's assume that jeans with designs on them are the latest trend. If you can't afford to buy jeans that come this way, add designs to the jeans you already have. Or, make designs on an old tshirt. There's no end to how you can come up with creative ways to make your clothing fit the newest fashions.

8. Sell last year's clothing to get money for clothes for this year. Have a yard sale or take the clothes to a local thrift store. This will give you some extra money to buy at least a few new items for your child's fall wardrobe this season.

9. Find out what day is tax free day at the local stores, and go this day. You'll save extra money by not having to pay taxes on your purchases. Not every state has this day each summer before school starts, so you'll have to find out which states do this.

10. Get rid of other expenses to afford clothes. You could ask the child to walk to school to save money on gas, which could pay for some clothes. The child can actually take part in the financial planning this way and learn some excellent budgeting lessons.

Buy what you need for the first day of school but don’t buy too much for the rest of the year. Some items, such as pencils and pens, might be useful to stock up on if there is a great sale. But since many stores overstock on items, you may actually be able to find some bargains by scanning for sales after the back to school rush is over.
